Joseph L. Mackin has been involved in nondestructive testing since 1978, when he began work at Baker Tubular Services and became their training manager in 1979. In 1991, he became the Executive Director of the International Pipe Inspectors Association (IPIA), a position that he still holds. IPIA provides training for companies involved in the nondestructive testing of pipe used in oil wells. Joe has been involved with ASNT in many capacities, including ASNT President and Chairman of the Board, Chair of Education and Qualification Council, a Division Manager of the Certification Management Council; and a member of the SNT-TC-1A review committee and interpretation committee.
At the local level, he is a past chair of the Greater Houston Section. Currently, chairs the Methods Division of the Education and Technical Council. He has a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Houston at Clear Lake and holds an ASNT Level III certificates in five methods. Mackin is also involved in committee work for the American Petroleum Institute. Joe is also a voting member of several ASTM technical committees.
Prior to becoming involved in nondestructive testing, Joe had nine years of leadership experience as an US Army officer, completing Airborne and Ranger schools. He served a tour in Vietnam.
